[Delivery example] A futon as a wedding gift and a 40-year-old handmade long cushion

3 futons and 4 long cushions → 6 futons and 5 long cushions

2025 Mr. U, Kanagawa Prefecture [Order via LINE]
Delivery example #024

Hello, I'm Kanauchi, a staff member at Sleep Shop.

This time, we will introduce a delivery example in which three single-sized futons and four long cushions were re-stuffed.

The items we took in were a futon that U-san received as a wedding gift, and a precious long cushion that was lovingly made by his family. These were futons that had been cherished for many years and were full of memories.

At U-san's request, we used less cotton than a regular futon for this re-stuffing. The reason for this is to reduce the burden on the futon when it is lifted or moved.

If you feel like your futon is too heavy to lift, this case study will surely be helpful.

I will introduce the details to you, so please read to the end.

Regarding the cotton futon we received

Condition of the mattress

We received three futons this time.
All of them were single size (100 x 195 cm).

When I checked the condition of the cotton, it was compressed and flat and dry. The binding threads were stretched and broken, and just looking at the condition of the fabric, it was not a comfortable mattress to use.

About the condition of the long cushion

The four futons we received this time were approximately 65 x 110 cm.
Three are in floral fabric and one is in striped fabric.

When we checked the filling of each one, we found that the cotton quality was almost the same in all four.
As you can see in the photo, there is a lot of cotton shell mixed in, so I think the filling is close to 100% cotton.
It was in good condition and could easily be rebuilt.

Features of this remake

Re-stuffed with a lighter mattress

As mentioned at the beginning, this is a case where a futon mattress of a normal weight was re-stuffed into a lighter one.

A typical mattress weighs around 7kg, so much so that even an adult man would have difficulty lifting it.
Mr. U also wanted the product to be as light as possible so that it would be easy to carry.

Therefore, we proposed a lightweight mattress. The specifications were also satisfactory, so we made a lightweight mattress.

It's convenient to carry around, but what about its functionality?

In order to make the jacket lighter, it is necessary to reduce the amount of padding, so some people may be concerned that this will reduce its warmth and ability to support the body.

This is indeed true; making something lighter inevitably results in a loss of functionality.

But there are ways to make up for that.

The method is to use two light futons layered on top of each other.

This method allows you to have a lightweight futon that has the same thickness and functionality as a regular futon. It is recommended as a choice that balances portability and functionality.

Lightweight mattresses have both advantages and disadvantages.
When considering placing an order, we hope you will make sure you understand both sides of the matter before making your choice.

Cotton that cannot be re-woven: "Woolen cotton"

In fact, there were a total of five long cushions sent to us. However, only four of them could be re-stitched. There was only one long cushion that could not be re-stitched.

Why couldn’t I fix it?

Please see the photo below↓

This is batting called " recycled wool." In many cases, recycled materials are used, such as old carpets and clothing that have been crushed into small pieces . The fibers are short and damaged, and are mixed with chemical adhesives and lint from different materials, making them difficult to intertwine and unsuitable for refilling. As shown in the photo, it is characterized by the mixture of blackened and colored fibers . If you are considering refilling, please make sure that it is not recycled wool.

What is the finished product?

About the finish of the mattress

The fabric is made in red and green with a sarasa pattern.
We were given three futons, so we made two of each into two, resulting in a total of six futons.

The amount of filling for this lightweight futon is set at approximately 3.5 kg.
When we actually picked it up, we found that it was very easy to carry and that it was a futon that put less strain on the body, even for people who are not very strong or elderly people.

If you stack two sheets as shown in the photo below, they become thick enough that you can use them without worrying about their functionality.

We can also tailor it to your desired weight, so please feel free to contact us.

About the finish of long zabuton

The fabric of the long cushion is red and blue with a plum blossom pattern.
We re-made the piece to the same size as when we received it (65 x 110cm).
Each piece is made with approximately 2.5 kg of padding.
Each of the long cushions we received contained over 2.5 kg of cotton, and we were able to make exactly five long cushions from four cushions.
By re-stuffing the cotton, it has been restored to its fluffy state, transforming it into a long cushion that is comfortable to use.

summary

This time, the delivery example was the re-stuffing of three futons that had been given as wedding gifts, and four long cushions that had been handmade by a family over 40 years ago.

Both futons were very important to Mr. U, so we are very pleased that after re-stuffing them, they are once again in a comfortable condition for him to use.

The futon and cushion we made this time will be used by Mr. U's daughter. We hope that these cotton futons and cushions, filled with the family's memories, will continue to be used and treasured.

Through this delivery example, we felt it was wonderful that cotton futons and cushions filled with a family's memories can be passed down to the next generation.

This order also made me realize once again that cotton futons and cushions can also be something that connects family feelings together.

Thank you for reading to the end.
