[Delivery example] Re-stuffing a worn cotton futon

Refilling your futon to make it comfortable again

2025 Mr. N, Kanagawa Prefecture [Order via LINE]
Delivery example #017

Hello, I'm Kanauchi, a staff member at Sleep Shop.
This time, we will introduce an example of re-stuffing a single-sized comforter and mattress.

The futon we received had ripped and wrinkled fabric and was in a state where it could not be used comfortably. However, we re-stuffed it and transformed it into a new, fluffy cotton futon. We will introduce it in detail, so please read to the end.

Regarding the cotton futon we received

Condition of the mattress

The futon we received this time was a single size.

At first glance, the cotton futon looks like it cannot be reused, with the fabric torn and the filling wrinkled. However, when I checked the filling, I found that it was probably 100% cotton, and it was not dry at all, so it was perfectly suitable for refilling.

One of the reasons why the filling is thought to be 100% cotton is the amount of "shells" tangled up in the cotton. If you look at the photo below, you can see many black dots in various places in the cotton. These black dots are actually "cotton shells." The fact that there is such a large amount of them suggests that there is a high possibility that the cotton is 100% cotton and does not contain any synthetic fibers.

Condition of the quilt

This comforter had the filling placed directly inside the zippered cover. It was the first time I'd seen this type of comforter. There was no "sewn" on the inside, which resulted in the filling being unevenly distributed and fibers being torn. (It is unclear whether the "sewn" was never there to begin with or whether it broke later.)

The filling of the comforter contains synthetic fibers and has a different texture than the filling of the mattress.

Generally, the filling of a duvet is made by mixing cotton with a certain percentage of synthetic fibers. This duvet is one such example. The main reason for mixing synthetic fibers is to reduce the weight while still providing a moderate amount of volume.

Since a duvet is placed directly on the body, if it is too heavy it puts a lot of strain on the body. Therefore, by mixing synthetic fibers, it is possible to achieve a lighter weight while still achieving a fluffy finish.

Features of this remake

When re-stuffing, the condition of the filling is important

"Because the fabric is very dirty..." "Because it looks tattered..."
You may be wondering if that is the reason why you can't recast the item.

Re-filling involves reusing the "batting". Even if the futon looks damaged, if the quality and condition of the batting is good, it can be reborn as good as new.

The cotton futon we received this time was also quite well-used, but the filling was in very good condition. As you can see, even if a cotton futon looks like it can't be used, the filling can still be reused in many cases.

Even if you have a cotton futon at home that you feel you have no choice but to throw away, the filling may still be usable. Instead of throwing it away, why not try re-filling it and making effective use of it?

What is the finished product?

About the finish

After being re-stuffed, it has been transformed into a fluffy cotton futon.
The fabric for both the comforter and the mattress pad is red with a plum blossom pattern, creating a uniform look for the cotton futon.

Your newly reborn cotton futon will be fluffy, warm, and more comfortable to use than ever before.
