Common problems when using cotton futons
Are there any of you who use cotton futons and have these thoughts?
・Cotton futons are heavy and difficult to lift
If the futon was lighter it would be easier to use.
A typical futon weighs about 6 to 7 kg, so lifting and lowering it every day is quite hard work.
And for older people, it can be even more taxing on the body.
A thinner and lighter mattress than usual
The key to this order was the amount of filling in the futon.
Upon consultation from the customer,
"I would like a single-size futon to be made with 4.0 kg of filling."
That's the story that was told.
As expected, the customer wanted the futon to be easier to lift and lower, which is why they requested 4.0 kg of filling.
I'm sure some of you are wondering, is that even possible?
At Nemuriya, our craftsmen carefully handcraft each piece, so we can meet your requests as much as possible, even for irregular orders.
Disadvantages
Even though it can be made lighter, there are of course some disadvantages, so please check carefully.
✖ Because it contains less cotton, it has less heat retention and may not be warm enough during cold seasons.
✖ Because it is not thick, larger people may find it uncomfortable to sleep on.
Recommended solutions
There are ways to address the drawbacks.
The method is to layer two of the same futons .
With this method, you can rest without losing heat even during cold seasons such as winter.
It also becomes thicker so I think it will provide better support for your body.
If you are interested, please consider it!
However, this method still has some disadvantages, such as having to buy an additional futon and having to lift and lower the futon more frequently, so please choose a method that suits your lifestyle.
Can I recast it into a different product?
This time, we re-stuffed the futon from a comforter to a mattress.
First of all, some people may wonder, is it possible to change a comforter into a different product such as a mattress?
The answer is yes. Any product can be re-stuffed as long as it is made of cotton.
One of Nemuriya's strengths is our wide repertoire of special re-casting and finished products that other stores do not offer, so please leave it to us.
About additional cotton
There are some things you need to be careful of when re-casting.
When cotton is re-stuffed, the fibers become thinner and shorter, reducing the amount of cotton and its durability . To prevent this, it may be necessary to add more cotton to maintain the amount of cotton or to increase the durability of the cotton.
When we re-weave our products, our craftsmen use their experience and wisdom to add the appropriate amount of cotton, and the price we charge in our online shop takes this into account.
When purchasing re-stuffing on the online shop, there is an option to add cotton. This is for people who want more cotton than they currently have, or who feel that the current amount of cotton is not enough.
Increasing the amount of cotton has the advantage of making the garment thicker and improving its heat retention, but please be aware that the downside is that it will be heavier as a result of adding more cotton.
If you have any other specific requests, such as "I would like you to not use synthetic fibers for the added cotton" or "I would like you to not add any additional cotton," please feel free to let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your request after looking at the condition of the cotton.
If you have any questions, please contact us via LINE, email or phone.
The quilt we kept
Condition of the quilt
There were few tears in the fabric or uneven distribution of the cotton, and it was clear that the item had been used and stored with great care.
The filling of comforters often has a high percentage of synthetic fibers to reduce weight, but when you actually touch it, it doesn't feel like 100% synthetic fibers, and it seems to contain a good amount of cotton. This can be determined by the length of the fibers of the filling and the resistance when you tear the filling with your fingers. There was no dirt or impurities, and the cotton was in very good condition.

Finished product and finish
When you look at the cotton futon from above, it doesn't look too strange, but when you compare the thickness, you can see that it is thinner than the normal size. The difference is clear when you actually hold it, and I was impressed by how easy it is to pick up the thin futon.
*The futon mattress with blue fabric is the standard size.

summary
Our shop can tailor cotton futons to be lighter, as in this case. We can also re-stuff a comforter into a different product, such as a mattress. In this case, we re-stuffed a mattress, which reduces the daily burden on the body. It was very rewarding to know that we were able to help make the customer's life even a little easier.
The futon we ordered this time was actually 210cm long (10cm longer than usual). By adding 10cm, it is designed so that even tall people can sleep comfortably. (This can be done for an additional 1,100 yen including tax)
